Fit & Yarn Details

I recommend a 100% wool or wool blend yarn for structure and ultimate warmth. If you're knitting the leg warmers for someone who is likely to throw these in a washing machine, then I'd recommend choosing a superwash yarn to minimise damage.

Needles & notions: 2.5 mm (US1.5) and 3 mm (US2.5) circular needle with a 40 cm /16" cord. Note, I used the magic loop method on the top ribbing so you may prefer to use a shorter cord (although they can be frustrating due to restricted movement) or DPNs. You'll also need a cable needle (if you're making the Cabled Leg Warmers), cute little scissors, one stitch marker and a yarn needle.

For the sample I used: Wild Earth Yarn 4ply Ashley. It's 100% NZ grown and milled and creates a lovely, soft fabric. Alternatively, you could also try Burnt Hill Yarns Eternity for a different colour range. One of my testers also enjoyed using Cascade Yarn 220 for this project and recommends it.

Plain Leg Warmers

Ease: 0-6 cm / 0-2.25" of positive ease (larger than your calf circumference) depending on your fit preference.

Finished Circumference: 35 (40, 45) (50, 55) cm / 13.75 (15.75, 17.75) (19.75, 21.75)"

Yarn required: 560 (640, 720) (800, 880) metres / 611 (700, 786) (875, 960) yards. If desired, you can reduce the amount of yarn used by shortening the leg warmers and having less fabric at the ankle.

Cabled Leg Warmers

Ease: From 3 cm / 1.25" of negative ease (smaller than your calf circumference) to 3 cm / 1.25" of positive ease (larger than your calf circumference). Due to the cabled fabric appearing more bulky than the plain version, I've adjusted the ease accordingly. The finished measurements are the same and you can make decisions based on your fit preference.

Finished Circumference: 35 (40, 45) (50, 55) cm / 13.75 (15.75, 17.75) (19.75, 21.75)"

Yarn required: 726 (830, 935) (1038, 1140) metres / 795 (908, 1020) (1135, 1248) yards. If desired, you can reduce the amount of yarn used by shortening the leg warmers and having less fabric at the ankle.

Techniques Used

Optional bind off method. You can substitute it with regular bind off using the larger needles, if you prefer.
